I finally got this website off the ground! This calls for a celebration. Sure, there are kinks to be smoothed out (hint: visit the now page) but I’m thrilled to have this website live.
The infrastructure behind it is no biggie:
- Hugo to statically generate the website
- Sass to manage hand-written CSS
- Cloudflare for domain management and deploys
- And of course, the source code is in a Github private repo. I don’t have any plans to open-source it as of now. Maybe someday.
Why Hugo? Succinctly put, it lets me write my content in Markdown. I’m a Software Engineer by profession and my preferred IDE is emacs, so I’m pretty comfortable with writing in Markdown.
For personal journaling, I use Obsidian which is a Markdown-first writing app. Hugo’s popular enough that I don’t have to be worried about it EOL’ing anytime soon. That being said, the beauty of Markdown is I can build a static site generator myself if and when that happens.
Why Markdown? I’m a fan of plaintext/open formats and protocols. In this day and age where software businesses come and go like fashion fads, I can sleep peacefully at night knowing my content’s accessible and legible with any plaintext editor.
I haven’t figured out what topics I want to write about here. For now, it’s going to be a catch-all of whatever interests me. I’ll figure it out as I go along.
I haven’t setup an email for this domain nor have I decided whether I want to tie this website to my meatspace identity. One’s an easier decision to make than the other, so I’ll soon have an email for you to send your hate mail/comments/feedback/suggestions.
